Talkyard for comments

Hello! This site is archived and no longer maintained. For Chris' main site go to chrisrosser.net

I’ve decided to experiment with my comments system (again). For a while now, I’ve been using a relatively novel, but slightly complex system based on email. While it’s proven great at keeping spam at bay, it also makes it difficult for readers to post comments. Since it’s based on old-fashioned email, it required an email client, something which many people just use no more, thanks to webmail services such as Gmail. There’s also a fair degree of manual work required and that doesn’t scale well at all, nor is convenient when people on the other side of the world post a comment and I’m in bed.

For a while, I’ve been playing with the idea of self hosting a comment system, but honestly, I cannot be arsed with the maintenance overhead, along with the headache of running another Linux server. Been there, bought the T-shirt, and it feels like I picked up the clap.

Instead of that, I’m trying Talkyard, after fellow blogger, Bryce Wray made the switch. Bryce like myself uses a static-site generator rather than WordPress, which doesn’t give us a native means of integrating comments.

Talkyard is open-source, advert and spyware free. You can self-host, but I cannot be bothered. Fortunately, it has an inexpensive hosting plan. What I like about the app is that it can scale, from a robust forum platform down to my use case, a simple hosted commenting system.

So, with Talkyard in place, you can post a comment whenever and on whatever you like. You can even login via your preferred social media account. Whatever floats your boat.

Note that as before, the comments system is to provide respectful discourse between my readers and I. So please play nice.

Anyway, I hope this works out. While I run with this trial, I will hide the old comments from sight, but I’ll not delete them unless asked.

Let me know what you think!
